The power of scripting languages such as Visual Basic Script (VBS) has been exploited recently to create and distribute viruses or worms that can cause severe damage to data on a PC, as well as major disruption to email operations.

Script viruses are easily distributed in email attachments and, in many cases, they can even be executed unknowingly.

Most current antivirus programs are unable to combat script viruses effectively, since they depend on recognising the content of the script. And as new varieties of script viruses are appearing every day, it is almost impossible to keep antivirus programs up to date with data or pattern files that describe the viruses.

One drastic solution is to disable the scripting facility completely, but this is not practical in an environment where scripts are used for automation of functions such as logon scripting, for example.

Instead of disabling scripting, or blocking scripts known to be bad, Volto Interceptor runs only those scripts marked by the user as being safe and trusted. If a new virus appears, there is no need to update the program.

Any attempt to run an untrusted script (for example by downloading a script virus) will be blocked and a warning displayed. Similarly, trusted scripts that have been modified or tampered with, will not be executed. See the configuration description for more information about how the program works.

Volto Interceptor uses highly secure digital signature technology to protect and identify trusted scripts, and the level of security is fully configurable.
